The Write On! Book for teachers is more than just a book. It includes handouts, templates, adaptable Microsoft Word documents, instructions for various components of creating illustrated hardbound books, samples from students, and some of the necessary materials. Most practical guides available to educators and parents do not include this same wealth of resources. The Write On! Book helps instructors guide students through the entire publishing process.
Writing
Instead of discrete assignments developed as guided practice for individual writing skills, the Write On! program has students apply various writing concepts to the same piece of writing—their own hardbound book.
Revising
Students spend a large amount of time revising their stories. They learn that the revision process is how their good story will become an awesome story. During the revision process, students spend each writing club period focusing on one writing strategy. For example, during Meeting 10 the students will receive a lesson on sentence fluency and then go back and read carefully through the sentences of their stories, revising them accordingly.
Illustrating
Through the Write On! program, students learn illustration techniques that will help them as they create the different pictures in their books. They learn about color, size, creative ideas, and many other important factors for illustrating a book.
Publishing and Celebrating
At the end of the Write On! program, students celebrate their efforts and accomplishments by reading their stories to an audience. Students learn and practice techniques for reading out loud to an audience.
